The Atlanta Braves announced that they have selected the contract of right-hander pitcher Jesse Chavez from Triple-A Gwinnett. Fellow right-hander Nathan Wiles was optioned in a corresponding move. To make room for Chavez on the 40-man, infielder Nacho Alvarez Jr. ha been transferred to the 60-Day IL.
This is Chavez' second go round with the Braves this season and his fifth overall. He pitched for them in each of the last five seasons, despite signing contracts with the Angels, Cubs, Rangers, and White Sox along the way.
He also pitched for Atlanta at the start of his career in 2010, and has played for the
Blue Jays on two separate occasions.
It's been a successful pairing. Chavez has a 2.56 ERA with the Braves dating back to 2021. He has appeared in a variety of roles, from opener to long relief to set-up. He was also a starter earlier in his career.
In his one previous appearance for Atlanta this season, which came on March 31st, he was selected to the roster, pitched a two inning appearance and was DFA'd after the game. He quickly re-signed a minor league deal.
In that game he allowed run on a pair of hits and a pair of walks. He'll probably stick around a little bit longer with the Braves this time around. A couple of veterans - name Enyel de los Santos and Rafael Montero - have been struggling, so if Chavez does relatively well, he could be on the roster for more than a game at a time.
Chavez, who is in his 18th major league season, is 51-65 for his career.
