Reese McGuire has elected free agency.

Former Toronto Blue Jays catcher Reese McGuire has chosen to enter free agency after clearing outright waivers, according to the MLB transaction log.
The Chicago White Sox had designated him for assignment over the weekend. McGuire spent roughly a month on Chicago’s roster.

McGuire expected to pursue another minor league opportunity

He initially joined the Milwaukee Brewers in spring training on a minor league deal but faced limited opportunities after the team signed Gary Sánchez to serve as backup to William Contreras.
Following the end of camp, McGuire opted out of his contract and secured a major league deal with the White Sox.
The 31-year-old played in 11 games during his stint with Chicago, posting a .172 batting average with no extra-base hits in 34 plate appearances.
Defensively, he also struggled, allowing two passed balls and failing to catch any of the 15 runners who attempted to steal against him.
While some of the responsibility for the stolen bases may fall on the pitching staff, McGuire has typically shown a capable arm.
Last season, he threw out 26% of base stealers in a backup role with the Cubs, a rate slightly above league average.
Still, the White Sox did not appear committed to keeping him as their backup catcher.
Over parts of nine major league seasons, McGuire has played for four teams, including two separate stints with Chicago.
He was earning $1.2 million, slightly above the league minimum.
With more than five years of service time, McGuire has the right to decline a minor league assignment while still receiving his full salary.
He is now expected to pursue another minor league opportunity. In 2024, he was productive with the Cubs, hitting nine home runs in 44 games.
Across his career, McGuire holds a .246/.292/.369 slash line in just over 1,200 plate appearances.
