The Toronto Blue Jays fell to the Seattle Mariners 8-3 in Sunday afternoon action at Rogers Centre. The Blue Jays have now dropped two in a row and fall to 12-10 on the season.
Easton Lucas started for the Blue Jays and got hit hard early, giving up two home runs in the 1st inning, including a two-run shot to notorious Blue Jays killer Cal Raleigh.
After two strong starts, Lucas has been roughed up in his last two appearances. After giving up eight runs through five in previous appearance, Lucas was touched for six runs and didn't get out of the second.
The bullpen was saved by
Paxton Schultz, who was just summoned from Triple-A. In his major league debut, Schultz went 4.1 innings, while striking out eight, which tied a major league record.
On the offensive side, timely hits continue to elude the Blue Jays. They did get two back in the second, thanks to RBI singles from
Tyler Heineman and
Bo Bichette; Nathan Lukes added a sacrifice fly in the third.
However, the Blue Jays also left 11 men on base, and couldn't put together a big inning. The Mariners also made some great defensive plays, with Randy Arozerena making a diving grab on a line drive by Andres Gimenez to limit the damage.
The Blue Jays had the lead runner on in six innings while the first two men on in four of them.
Both Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had two hits apiece, while Heineman was 3-4 with an RBI.
The Blue Jays begin a three game series against the Houston Astros on Monday. Kevin Gausman will be opposed by Hunter Brown. First pitch is scheduled for 8:10PM ET
