The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the New York Mets 3-2 in a Saturday night game at Citi Field in Queens. With the loss, the Jays have dropped the first two in the series and fall to 5-4 on the season.
Chris Bassitt made his second start of the season for the Blue Jays, while Griffin Canning got the ball for the Mets.
The game remained scoreless until the 5th inning as both teams battled frigid weather conditions, a water-logged field, and an inconsistent strike zone from home plate umpire Emil Jimenez.
The Blue Jays finally broke through in the top of the fifth thanks to three straight singles with a knock by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. scoring
Alan Roden from second base.
Roden also scored the Blue Jays second run in the sixth after he and Bo Bichette hit back-to-back doubles.
The Blue Jays were able to work Griffin Canning early and he departed with two on and none out in the fifth and pitch count of 89. Both Roden and Will Wagner in particular worked deep counts, with Wagner seeing 17 pitches in his first two plate appearances.
Chris Bassitt made the best start of the Blue Jays young season so far, going 6.2 innings, giving up just two hits while striking out nine.
Yimi Garcia came on and gave up a single and a walk to load the bases before getting pinch hitter Starling Marte to ground out to end the inning.
Jesse Winker hit a two-run triple off Brendon Little to tie the game in the eighth. George appeared to hurt himself after crashing into the right field wall on the play. He was in noticeable pain as he walked off the field. He was replaced in RF by Nathan Lukes.
After Nick Sandlin allowed a hit a single and a walk to open the ninth, Francisco Lindor hit a sacrifice fly off of Jeff Hoffman to walk it off for New York.
The Blue Jays and Mets wrap up their series with a day game on Sunday. Bowden Francis will be opposed by David Peterson. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35PM ET.
