Max Scherzer continues to make progress as he continues to work his way from his thumb inflammation. The future Hall-Of-Famer, has been sidelined since leaving his Blue Jays debut after three innings, with lat soreness. He was subsequently placed on the IL and Easton Lucas was recalled to take his place.
According to Blue Jays insider
Ben Nicholson-Smith, Scherzer had some imaging done Friday in Baltimore. According to manager John Schneider, everything looked normal and there was no cause for concern. The starter also threw off flat ground on Saturday, although there is no still no timetable for his return.
Neither the Blue Jays nor Scherzer want to rush back. With Lucas stepping up big time in his first two starts, there is less urgency than there was first week of the season.
Although he is on the 15-Day IL, Scherzer can miss up to two months. While that appears unlikely at this point, if he does need a longer layoff, the team can always move him to the 60-Day IL to clear up a roster spot.
Should Scherzer return by late April or early May, Lucas, as effective as he has been, is likely the odd man out and would return to Triple-A, where he continue to develop as a starter.
Nicholson-Smith also offered minor updates on relievers Ryan Burr and Erik Swanson. Burr threw a bullpen session on Saturday and Swanson is set to face live hitters sometime next week. There is still no timeline for either of them.
For now, the Blue Jays and Scherzer are in a waiting game. Fortunately, his replacement is doing just fine.
