Marcus Stroman pitching for the Yankees

The New York Yankees' saga with Marcus Stroman continues with an added a layer as the mercurial starter has been placed on the 15-Day IL with left knee inflammation. Right-hander Allan Winans will be taking his place on the active roster.

Stroman famously was a no-show during the first week of Spring Training earlier this year, as he refused to accept that he was going to pitch out of the bullpen. After appearing to talk himself out of a roster job all together, the Yankees suddenly needed starters after injuries to Gerrit Cole, Clarke Schmidt, and Luis Gil. Now, Stroman will get to join his rotation brethren on the injured list.
Blue Jays fans are no strangers to Stroman's antics, as the two-time All-Star has a reputation for being overly emotional on the mound.
It's been a rough start to the season for Stroman. He has only pitched 9.1 innings across three starts, while his ERA has ballooned to 11.57. During the Yankees 9-1 loss to the Giants, Stroman lasted 0.2 innings while giving up five runs. Following the game, manager Aaron Boone said Stroman was dealing with knee soreness and was sent for X-rays.
His injury and decline in production come an awkward for Stroman, as he is in the final year of his two year $37.7MM deal, though he does have a vesting option for 2026. Knowing the Yankees though, this may be the nail in the coffin, especially with Gil expected back later this year, and Cole on track for opening day 2026.
Maybe this absence will be the reset that Stroman needs.
