The 2025 season is flying by, and it's still unclear whether or not shortstop Bo Bichette fits into the Toronto Blue Jays' future plans.
Bichette, 27, is already a two-time All-Star and has received Most Valuable Player votes three times. He was once viewed as half of Toronto's burgeoning offensive nucleus alongside Vladimir Guerrero Jr., but with free agency looming, things are now much foggier.
Toronto has apparently yet to begin negotiations with Bichette as they have been waiting to see how he plays this season to not overpay if he ends up putting up poor numbers like he did in 2024 or if they decide to simply let him go.
Blue Jays potential contract offer to Bo Bichette revealed
Bichette has significantly stepped up his game this season after a rough outing in 2024 filled with struggles at the plate and plagued with a ton of injuries keeping him out for a solid portion of the year.
This season, Bichette has stepped things up which is why former MLB GM Jim Bowden believe that if he continues to improve a returns to the player he was a few years ago, he should get a deal of around $171 million over 6 years.
«He'll need to pick it up some and get back to his 2021-23 form if he wants to get paid at that value, which is probably close to the six-year, $171 million offer that Bregman received from the Tigers last offseason," -Bowden
If
Bichette can truly return to being the player he was between 2021 and 2023, it would be a no brainer for the Blue Jays to bring him back on a six year deal.
The 27-year old was one of the best pure hitters in baseball from 2021-2023, batting .290 or better each year, slugging at least 20 homers each year, and twice leading the American League in hits. -Heyen
At the same time, unless
Bichette just randomly became the worst player on the team, it makes no sense for the Blue Jays to simply let him go without making some kind of offer since they would not be able to replace in free agency.
Bo is clearly one of their top players and if they make him a decent offer to stick around in Toronto before the end of the season, he will likely take it since it's clear he wants to stay with Guerrero.
However, if the team waits until free agency to make him an offer, they might end up ruining that relationship and he might sign with another team out of spite.
