The Major League Baseball Players Association released a heartfelt statement following Buck Martinez’s retirement, paying tribute to a career that left a lasting mark across the game.

The legendary Toronto Blue Jays broadcaster announced Friday that he is stepping away from the booth, bringing to a close more than four decades behind the microphone.
In the hours that followed, tributes and well wishes poured in from across the baseball world.
Few, however, captured the scope of Martinez’s impact quite like the statement issued by the MLBPA.
“Buck Martinez’s retirement announcement today resonated in Toronto and throughout the baseball world. From signing his first professional contract with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1967 to his final appearance in the Blue Jays broadcast booth last season, Buck has built nearly 60 years of achievement and service that few can match,” the statement read. “His career included 17 seasons as a player, followed by roles as manager of the Toronto Blue Jays, manager of the first U.S. team in the inaugural World Baseball Classic, and extended tenures as a broadcaster with Baltimore, Toronto, and multiple national outlets."
“Buck has been a steady and conscientious advocate for players’ rights and the MLBPA throughout his career, as well as a respected ambassador for our game. As we celebrate his remarkable career, we thank him for his unwavering commitment and integrity and wish him, his wife Arlene, and the entire Martinez family all the best in this next chapter.”

Buck Martinez's influence on the game on and off the field will endure

In 2022, Martinez was named a finalist for the MLBPA’s Curt Flood Award, which honors a former player who exemplifies a lifelong dedication to the Players Association and the advancement of players’ rights.
The award is presented annually as part of the Players Choice Awards and was established in 2020 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Flood’s landmark U.S. Supreme Court case.
Now 77, Martinez played 17 Major League seasons as a catcher, including the final six years of his playing career with the Toronto Blue Jays from 1981 to 1986.
After retiring as a player, he transitioned into broadcasting and later returned to the Blue Jays as manager for the 2000 and 2001 seasons.
Martinez spent many years with Sportsnet calling Blue Jays games, becoming one of the most recognizable and respected voices in Canadian baseball.
His retirement marks the end of an era, but his influence on the game — on and off the field — will endure.
