Former Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Steward Berroa is on the move once again.
The Philadelphia Phillies announced they have acquired outfielder Steward Berroa from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for cash considerations, and he has been optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
The Brewers had designated him for assignment last week.
The Phillies have acquired outfielder Steward Berroa from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for cash considerations and optioned him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. To make room for Berroa on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Yoniel Curet was designated for assignment.
Phillies acquired Berroa for outfield depth, prime candidate for a call-up
Berroa, who turns 27 in June, has had limited experience in the majors.
He appeared in 28 games for Toronto Blue Jays in 2024 and just two games for Milwaukee last season, compiling a .167/.314/.190 line over 51 plate appearances.
While his offensive numbers in the majors are modest, Berroa offers value as a speed-and-defense specialist.
In the minors, he has consistently recorded 40 or more stolen bases in a season.
Although he was limited to 34 steals in both 2024 and 2025, he played only 79 and 86 games those years, respectively, projects to roughly a 60-steal pace over a full season.
Defensively, he has been effective in limited big league action, logging five Defensive Runs Saved and three Outs Above Average in just 120 innings in the outfield.
His Triple-A performance suggests there may be untapped potential at the plate, with a .255/.353/.373 line across 673 plate appearances.
Berroa still has one option year remaining, giving the Phillies flexibility to keep him in Triple-A.
Should Philadelphia need to bolster its outfield depth, he could be a prime candidate for a call-up.
