It was a somewhat shocking decision when the Toronto Blue Jays decided to non-tender Jordan Romano. It was even more surprising when they landed Jeff Hoffman. It felt ironic that the Philadelphia Phillies - Hoffman's previous team - then landed Romano. Now Phillies GM Dave Dombrowski is opening up on the process that lead to a series of unique events.

Dombrowski stated that the Phillies pursued Hoffman very aggressively and that the deal that he signed with Toronto, wasn't all that different to what the Phillies were offering. At time, Hoffman and agents simply felt that they could get more on the market.
While they did initially, concerns about Hoffman's shoulder led the Orioles and the Braves to renege on their deals, and Hoffman wound up signing with the Jays for three years, and $33MM.
Romano, on the other hand, is now in a middle relief role, after struggling to a 13.50 ERA in his first 9 1/3 innings as a Phillie.
«I can't tell you that the number he ended up signing for was substantially different than the one that we ended up offering him,» But he wasn't prepared to take that at that time. [Hoffman's agents] just thought they were going to get much more.» - Dave Dombrowski

The Athetlic's Matt Gelb however was noted that the Phils told agents they were only seeking one year deals, which would appear to contradict Dombrowski's claims.
Given Hoffman's performance to start the year, there's bound to be some second-guessing in the front office's of the Phillies, Braves, and Orioles. Meanwhile, Mark Shaprio and Ross Atkins are smiling.
