Schultz ties record in Major League debut

Schultz, who was called up late Saturday night following the DFA of Jacob Barnes, entered Sunday's game in the 2nd inning after Easton Lucas gave up six runs. What Schultz did from there was nothing short of spectacular.
Schultz, who started in both Vancouver and New Hampshire, but has been more of a long reliever with Buffalo, ended up going 4.1 innings giving up just two hits while striking out eight. It is that latter number that helped him get into the history books.
By fanning eight, Schultz tied the major league record for most strikeouts in a major league debut by a relief pitcher.
He threw close to 70 pitches, which is more than he had thrown in any one game in Buffalo this season. For the Bisons this year, he had pitched in four games with a 2.08 ERA in 8.2 innings.
He started seven games for Buffalo last year before transitioning full time to the bullpen last year. From 2021-2023, he made 62 starts while playing for Vancouver, New Hampshire, and Buffalo.
While Schultz likely won't pitch for a few days, he gives the Blue Jays another potential option for the fifth spot in the rotation. Even if stays in the pen, he gives the Blues Jays a true long relief option, which they haven't had since Yariel Rodriguez transitioned to a late-inning role.
Whatever happens, he deserves to stick around for a while.
