Sportsnets Shi Davidi spoke with Blue Jays manager John Schneider earlier today about Santander being left out of the lineup again this afternoon.
Anthony Santander isn't in the Blue Jays lineup today due to some «soreness/impingement going on» in his left hip, said manager John Schneider. «Hopefully available off the bench.»
Schneider said Santander tweaked the hip during the finale against the Rays on Thursday.
Once ready, Schneider said he'll «probably» move Santander down in the lineup to «just take a little pressure off him,» while also capitalizing on what Daulton Varsho is doing right now.
Santander needs more time because of a cranky shoulder and a sore hip and partly to reset after a series against the Tampa Bay Rays in which he went 1 for 12 with five strikeouts.
"His shoulder was a little bit cranky still," Schneider said. "So I didn't want to force him in there if he couldn't."
Schneider wanted to give his newcomer a couple days off to rest and reset.
Santander joined the Jays following a career-year with the Baltimore Orioles in which he had 44 home runs and 102 RBI in 155 games.
He was expected to come in and help improve a Blue Jays offence that struggled to put runs on the board in 2024. So far, however, he's struggled to make much of an impact at all.
The free-agent acquisition has struggled with a .187 average, five homers and 16 RBI after a career year in 2024.
"I kind of wanted to stay away from him, unless it was something very important like a pinch hit situation."
