Toronto Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk powers Mexico over Brazil in WBC rout

The blowout triggered the mercy rule after six innings and eliminated Brazil from the tournament.

Brazil finished the event winless at 0-3, losing 15-5 to Team USA, 8-0 to Italy, and 16-0 to Mexico.

One bright spot came from Lucas Ramirez, son of Boston Red Sox legend Manny Ramirez, who led the team with two home runs and two RBIs during the tournament.

Mexico jumped ahead early in the first inning when Toronto Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk ripped an RBI double off the left-field wall to make it 2-0.

They extended the lead in the second inning on a solo home run from Jarren Duran, his first of the tournament.

Duran added a two-run double two innings later to push the score to 7-0.

Later in the fourth, Kirk launched his first home run of the tournament to stretch the lead to 10-0.

Kirk finished the game 2-for-3 with a home run, four RBIs, and two runs scored.

Mexico kept piling on runs with a wild pitch, an RBI double from Alexis Wilson, a two-run homer from Alek Thomas, and another two-run blast by Julian Ornelas, bringing the score to 16-0.

The win sends Mexico to 2-0 in Pool B, tied with Italy and the United States.

With Brazil and Great Britain eliminated, the three remaining teams will battle for the two spots that advance.

Mexico's next game is against Team USA on March 9 at 8:00 p.m. ET.
