Toronto Blue Jays make big roster moves ahead of Cleveland Guardians game

Turnbull made three appearances for the Blue Jays in his short stint with the team, finishing with a 1-1 record along with a 7.11 ERA over 6.1 innings pitched.

The 32-year-old's last appearance with the team came on June 20 against the Chicago White Sox. He gave up four runs on five hits and two walks over two innings.

Turnbull signed as a free agent with the Blue Jays in early May after Scherzer originally hit the injured list with right thumb inflammation.

A native of Demopolis, AL, Turnbull was in his seventh big league campaign, having previously spent time with the Philadelphia Phillies and Detroit Tigers.

With Scherzer set to return to the mound for a start against the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday, Toronto had to trim down its roster.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner has made one appearance with the Blue Jays this season in late March against the Baltimore Orioles. He was taken out of the game after pitching three innings as his thumb issues flared up.

He has since been rehabbing in the minor leagues and made two appearances at triple-A Buffalo, pitching 8.2 innings and finishing with a 2.08 ERA.

The 40-year-old signed with the Blue Jays as a free agent in the off-season on a one-year, $15.5 million deal.
