Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider provided an update on Alejandro Kirk's thumb injury following the 5-4 loss to White Sox on Friday afternoon.
The Toronto Blue Jays boast one of the most well-rounded rosters in Major League Baseball, and a big part of that strength comes from having elite catcher Alejandro Kirk behind the plate.
Kirk got the start on Friday against the Chicago White Sox, marking his fifth appearance of the season.
However, the game took a concerning turn when Kirk exited early due to injury.
After grounding out in the top of the ninth inning, he did not return for the bottom half and was replaced by Tyler Heineman.
Following the game, manager John Schneider revealed that Kirk would undergo X-rays on his right thumb after sustaining the injury.
Schneider noted that the decision to remove him came directly from Kirk.
John Schneider says that Kirk told him he needed to come out of the game when he met him out on the field. “When he says that, let’s get it checked out… especially with a guy like him and how important he is to us, I’m going to be ultra cautious there.” #BlueJays
Kirk’s decision to come out of the game reflects just how valuable he is to the team, as he typically plays through minor discomfort.
If he is forced to miss time, Heineman is expected to take on a larger role behind the plate, while Brandon Valenzuela could be a likely call-up option.
Still, there is a noticeable gap between Kirk and the team’s backup options. Whether it’s his production at the plate or his defensive ability, particularly his pitch framing—Kirk remains one of the top catchers in the league.
Now in his seventh season, all with Toronto, he continues to be a key piece of the roster and a fan favorite.
With the Blue Jays already dealing with injuries to their pitching staff, losing Kirk for any length of time would have an immediate impact as the team works through the early part of the season.
