The Toronto Blue Jays have signed former Washington Nationals catcher CJ Stubbs to a minor league contract.

According to the teams official transaction log, the Toronto Blue Jays have signed free agent catcher CJ Stubbs to a minor league contract.
Stubbs, 28, reached the major leagues for the first time in 2025, earning a call-up with the Washington Nationals.
The younger brother of Phillies catcher Garrett Stubbs, CJ spent the bulk of his professional career in the Astros' minor league system before being released in May 2024.
He later signed a minor league deal with Washington, which eventually led to his first big-league opportunity.
Garrett and CJ Stubbs are brothers playing in the same baseball game for the first time in their lives

Stubbs has shown flashes offensively in the minors, though overall production has been inconsistent

From 2022 through 2024, he posted a combined .202/.323/.404 slash line with a 98 wRC+. His performance dipped further this season, as he recorded a .148/.279/.240 line and a 57 wRC+ across Double-A and Triple-A.
While his 11.6% walk rate stands out as a positive, Stubbs has struggled with swing-and-miss, striking out in 37.3% of his plate appearances.
FA CJ Stubbs mashed after being sent down last season and has fantastic bat speed/EVs. Really struggles vs spin.

Very athletic defender who does an outstanding job controlling run game. May be room for growth in armside receiving with stance and setup adjustments.
Defensively, however, he draws strong marks, with Baseball Prospectus grading his pitch framing as a plus skill in the minors.
Entering the offseason, Stubbs was the least experienced of five catchers on the Nationals' 40-man roster. Washington ultimately designated him off the roster, and he went unclaimed by other clubs.
After spending most of the past seven seasons in the minor leagues, Stubbs qualified for minor league free agency five days following the conclusion of the World Series.
