Blue Jays fans will finally get to hear from Vladimir Guerrero Jr.. in his own words. After officially announcing the 14 year, $500MM extension while on the road in Boston, Toronto returns to the Rogers with their Blue Jay-for-life in tow.
This will be an epic conclusion to a saga that at one point, seemed like it wouldn't end in the Blue Jays favour. After failing to reach an agreement with Vladdy by his initial February 18th deadline, it was widely expected that the slugger would enter free agency at the end of the year.
Instead, Toronto's homegrown superstar decided to forgo that opportunity and chose to stay where he's always wanted to be, in Canada's largest city.
While team translator Hector 'Tito' Lebron, will undoubtedly be present for the presser, the fact that Vladdy did his most recent post-game interview as well as narrated a short video in English, it would be great for the fans to see him go through the press conference entirely in that language. Maybe he'll even throw in some French as well.
No doubt the most popular question will be about the lack of sticking to his original deadline and what him change his mind.
In a piece shortly after the extension was announced, MLB insider
Mark Feinsand talked about the different language surrounding deadlines.
One agent noted that such deadlines often mean «no negotiation,» though if a club extends an offer, the agent has a fiduciary duty to take that to his or her client. «If there have been zero talks, I would tell a team that approached me now, even if we didn't set a deadline, that I will not engage in conversations,» the agent said.
Every agent and every player is different.
«It depends on the nature of the relationship between the team, agent and player,» an NL executive said. «Sometimes one side has little choice but to impose a hard deadline in order to spur constructive dialogue. In other situations, the relationship between the parties is strong enough to have open and honest conversations right from the start. There are no hard feelings if one side receives a polite 'No, thank you' early on in the process.»
Now, the Blue Jays don't have to worry about any of that.
