The Toronto Blue Jays are staring down a 2-0 deficit as they head to T-Mobile Park to play the Seattle Mariners in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series on Wednesday.
The notion that the Blue Jays were on their way to the World Series just a few days ago now seems like more of a longshot and more implausible that it has ever seemed before.
They now have to beat the Seattle Mariners four of the next five games.
That's not impossible, with the Mariners going home for the next three games, it just seems unlikely.
The two games at the Rogers Centre to begin the American League Championship Series couldn't have turned out worse for the Jays, who were close to spectacular all season long while playing at home.
But they are now down 2-0 in this best-of-seven series, losing a close game in which they didn't hit in the opener, and then losing a not-so-close game in which, again, they didn't hit.
Right-hander
Trey Yesavage was unable to replicate
his previous dominance and surrendered five runs in four innings of work to take the loss in what ultimately became a 10-3 win for Seattle.
Blue Jays sweep in Seattle not impossible, but improbable
That leaves Toronto down two games as they head to the west coast for the next three games of the series.
MLB Network broadcaster Jon Morosi brought up the 2023 ALCS in describing how quickly the tone of a series can change following a 2-0 lead.
«The 2023 ALCS began with the Rangers taking a 2-0 lead on the road. The Rangers lost the next 3 at home (to the Houston Astros). Texas recovered to win the following two, and the pennant, but this is useful context for those wishing to make any declarations in the 6th inning of Game 2,»
With the Mariners now enjoying a one-game cushion as they look to clinch a trip to the World Series at home, the Blue Jays will be looking for their offense to wake up and start scoring runs like they did against New York if they're going to represent Canada in the World Series for the first time since 1993.
The ALCS has no game today as the two teams travel to Seattle. With that being said there seems to be more questions than answers.
Will the day off be enough for the Blue Jays to bounce back?
Will there be any more games at the Rogers Centre this season?
Back in April the Blue Jays lost a three-game series to the Mariners 2 games to 1 at Rogers Centre.
A month later the Jays went on to sweep the Mariners in 3 games at T-Mobile Park.
Lets hope history repeats itself as the Blue Jays will be looking for another sweep in enemy territory when it counts the most.
