Former general manager-turned-baseball analyst Steve Phillips recently suggested that the Toronto Blue Jays should consider shopping Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Phillips made the remarks on MLB Tonight during a conversation with hosts Matt Vasgersian and Harold Reynolds. The trio was discussing the Blue Jays' offseason and their potential pursuit of free-agent first baseman Pete Alonso. Phillips believes Alonso would be a strong fit for the Blue Jays, alongside Alex Bregman, especially if Toronto is unable to reach an agreement with Guerrero before the season starts.
In that scenario, Phillips argued that if Alonso were to take over at first base, the Blue Jays should consider putting Guerrero on the trading block. The goal would be to bring in young, athletic talent in return and address some of the team's roster needs.
Although Guerrero has expressed a willingness to play third base, he remains far stronger defensively at first.
Of course, this all hinges on the Blue Jays actually landing Alonso, and there are conflicting reports about how close the team is to securing him.
In a December interview on a Spanish-language podcast, Guerrero stated that he is prepared for a trade, while the Blue Jays are known to be seeking a massive return for their franchise player.
While the chances of Guerrero being traded remain slim-even if the Blue Jays do land Alonso-this is Toronto, and as we've seen, anything is possible.
