Bo Bichette is itching to suit up in a different kind of uniform The 2026 World Baseball classic is approaching and the Blue Jays shortstop is hoping to join his older brother Dante Jr. in playing for the Brazilian National Team.
Bo's father - former major league outfielder Dante Bichette - is American. His mother Mariana is Brazilian. Because of this Bo is eligible to play for either team.
However for Bo, the choice was never a choice. It was always going to be Brazil. As soon the country qualified for the main tournament, the team reached out.
Bo and Dante still have family living in Brazil, which plays a big part in their decision.
My grandparents have become big baseball fans because of what we do. I know they're excited. My goal is to go and help the team win, and hopefully bring attention to baseball in Brazil. I think that would mean a lot to everybody in my family.
Before becoming a major league, Bo had dreams of playing in Japan. The Japanese brought baseball to Brazil in the nearly 1900's and the country still has a large Japanese population.
The national team is also managed by
Yuichi Matsumoto, a former Japanese professional baseball player from Sao Paulo who is currently coaching for the NPB's Yakult Swallows.
I think the WBC is amazing for the game of baseball. It brings attention from not just baseball fans, but casual fans. I don't think there's a better way to do that than to have countries competing against each other.
There are currently no active Brazilians in the MLB. Bichette hopes that the WBC will change that.
