It may be Spring Training, but make no mistake, this Toronto Blue Jays team is hitting... and winning. 17 games into the Grapefruit League season, the Blue Jays sit atop standings with a 10-6 record, along with one tie.
Not only is it the best record in the Grapefruit League, but it is the third best overall record in Spring Training, behind only the San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs, who both play in the Cactus League out in Arizona.
While many fans and analysts don't necessarily put a lot of stock into Spring Training wins and losses, the fact that the Blue Jays are hitting, and well, needs to be taken as a positive.
And it's not just the starters, the Blue Jays are getting contributions from players at all levels.
Through 17 games, the Blue Jays have hit 24 home runs, including from peripheral players like Will Robertson, Jay Harry, and Eddinson Paulino, as well as top prospects such as Alan Roden and Arjun Nimmala, and regulars like Bo Bichette, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and Anthony Santander. Even Myles Straw, he of six career major league home runs, has gotten in on the action.
Their pitching has also looked good too.
Max Scherzer is his old self, dominating the opposition with 14 strikeouts in three appearances. Jose Berrios has also pitched well and Jeff Hoffman has looked lights-out in his first Spring Training since being re-acquired by the Blue Jays.
Many others have looked great as well including Kevin Gowdy and Mason Fluharty.
While there are still two weeks left in the Grapefruit League season, all signs have been very encouraging for manager John Schneider and a resurgent Toronto team.
Hopefully, this will carry over into the regular season.
