The Toronto Blue Jays could be losing one of their key front office players.
James Click, who was hired by the Blue Jays in 2023 and is currently the vice president of baseball strategy for the organization, was recently interviewed by the Colorado Rockies for their vacant General Manager position.
According to Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic, he was one of three people interviewed, along with Scott Sharp, the Assistant General Manager of the Kansas City Royals, and Matt Forman, who holds the same position with the Cleveland Guardians.
The #Rockies expect to interview a narrow group of finalists next week for the position of leader of baseball operations.
The Rockies are in for an overhaul this offseason. In the middle of summer, they fired longtime manager Bud Black, whilst also bringing back former manager Clint Hurdle as hitting coach. After the season ended, General Manager Bill Schmidt, who had been in the job since 2021, sstepped down.
Click has the experience to lead a front office, including previous experience as General Manager.
He got his start in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, who hired him in 2006 following an internship. He was promoted to Vice President in 2017.
In 2020, he was lured away by the Houston Astros to be their new General Manager. However, he never really got along with owner Jim Crane and rejected a new one year contract following the 2022 season.
The Blue Jays hired him that February.
Click has been a key figure in construction of Blue Jays roster
Throughout his three seasons in Toronto, Click has been a key figure in helping Ross Atkins and Mark Shapiro shape the current roster.
While leaving Toronto for the hapless Rockies might seem like a downgrade, Click was always a figure it as assumed would land another GM gig sooner rather than later.
Colorado's timeline is unknown at this point, and no decision has been made.
