On Tuesday, Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred made the consequential decision of his tenure when stated that permanent eligibility ends at death, thereby reinstating Pete Rose, Shoeless Joe Jackson, and a handful of others Now, a Blue Jays legend is sharing his thoughts on whether he thinks Rose will be elected.
Former General Manager
Pat Gillick - the architect of the 92 and 93 World Series winning teams and himself a Hall Of Fame inductee - was among a handful of people asked by The Athletic on Rose's chances.
Based on play and career achievements alone, Gillick said that a vote for the late hit king is a no-brainer. However, he acknowledges that the Reds star's case is complicated and unique and not cut-and-dry.
"I think there's more to it than the on-the-field thing. The character means a lot and I'd have to question that. It's going to be a tough subject.» - Pat Gillick on Pete Rose
The Hall's morality clause, instituted by Kennesaw Mountain Landis after the Black Sox scandal, has long been a source of contention among fans and Hall voters. Look no further than the PED era as evidence. Many Hall voters stayed from voting for players like Barry Bonds or Roger Clemens because of their alleged connection to PED's. Others, like Jon Morosi only voted for those who weren't suspended. Many others still voted for them all. It's all very complex.
The talk around Rose is all conjecture of course. There has been no indication from the league or the hall that there will special consideration given to Rose and Jackson, or whether they will be included on future special era ballots.
Jackson might have a better case than Rose, but only time will tell.
