If you tuned into last night's game between the Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays, you may have noticed some unusual activity before the game started. After the national anthems had finished, pitchers Bowden Francis and Kevin Gausman remained on the field - caps in their hands - along with Rays backup catcher Ben Rortvedt.

It was a good ol' fashioned anthem standoff.
These kinds of things happen occasionally and are all in good fun. A less serious side to a most intense game. Often, standoffs last for three, four, five minutes. According to announcer Dan Shulman, the Rortvedt-Francis/Gausman standoff went on for nearly ten minutes. Although, at two vs. one, the Blue Jays made have had an unfair advantage.

For a while, it appeared as though neither party was willing to blink first. Francis, the ever-stoic Zen Master, and Gausman, the laid-back pitching whiz unable to hold in his laughter. On the other side, Rortvedt was trying to negotiator, pleading with the Blue Jays' duo to accept his offer of a draw.
Eventually, with starting pitcher Chris Bassitt ready to go, and with the nee for the first pitch to get underway, the two sides agreed to a truce, walking off the field at the same time, to cheers from the crowd, many of whom were in on and appreciated the joke.
Gausman and Francis received high-fives upon returning to the Blue Jays dugout, while Rortvedt also got kudos from his team.
The moral of the story? As Buck Martinez said upon the standoff's conclusion
Boys will be boys.
