Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is officially a Blue Jay for life. A few days after it was reported that the 4X All-Star agreed to a 14 year, $500M extension to stay in Toronto, the Blue Jays made the official announcement after he passed his physical.
It took slightly longer to get through all the formalities as the Blue Jays were on the road and had to scramble to find the necessary equipment and facilities.
Two key aspects of the deal are a full no-trade clause and no deferred money. The latter part, makes it the second-largest contract in baseball history in terms of upfront money, behind only Juan Soto. While Shohei Ohtani has a $700MM deal, his deferrals make the contract worth closer to $460MM.
In conjunction with the announcement, the Blue Jays released a video on social media, narrated by Vladdy in English.
Guerrero also released a statement of his own.
I love our Blue Jays fans; they have supported me my whole career and made me feel appreciated every day - Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
This officially ends a months-long saga of talks, and failed negotiations that some felt was over after Vladdy's original deadline of February 18th passed.
This has wide-ranging ramifications for the Blue Jays and will create a ripple effect throughout the league.
Edward Rogers, Chairman and principal owner, also chimed in saying that today was a win for the best fans in baseball.
With this finally laid to rest, Vladdy can now turn his focus to this season, as well as the next 14 years.
