To make room on the 40-man roster, pitchers
Max Scherzer and
Erik Swanson were transferred to the 60-Day IL, while
Josh Walker was optioned to Triple-A to clear a spot on the 26-man roster. Turnbull was optioned to the FCL Blue Jays in order to ramp up before the season.
While the Blue Jays will eventually need to make an additional move, they can stash Turnbull in Florida for now. He hasn't pitched since June of last year. He will likely join the rotation upon his return to the majors.
Urena was seen traveling with the Blue Jays and will likely join for their series in Los Angeles against the Angels.
Urena also becomes a good candidate to fill Scherzer's spot in the rotation and could also move to the bullpen once Turnbull joins the team.
Ureňa is now in his 11th MLB season and the Blue Jays become his eighth team after appearing in a single game for the Mets earlier in the year. He spent the first six seasons of his career with the Miami Marlins.
Turnbull meanwhile joins his third organization and his seventh season. He spent five seasons with the Detroit Tigers and signed with the Philadelphia Phillies last year, before an injury prematurely ended his season.
The transfers of Scherzer and Swanson to the 60-Day IL ends any chance of either of them returning before the end of the month. However, June is still a possibility.
