The Toronto Blue Jays have signed right-handed pitcher Connor Overton to a minor league contract. It brings Overton back to the organization which whom he made his major league debut with back in 2021.
Overton was drafted by the Miami Marlins in the 15th round of the 2014 draft. He spent the next seven years bouncing around with various teams including the Washington Nationals and the San Francisco Giants, as well as the independent club Sioux City Explores and Lancaster Barnstormers before signing with the Blue Jays in 2020.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Overton didn't play at all that season. After becoming a free agent, he re-signed another minor league deal, and was called up to the majors for the first time on August 11, 2021.
He made his debut the next day against the
Los Angeles Angels. In 4 appearances for the Blue Jays during his debut campaign, Overton did not give up a run, while striking out four.
He was designated for assignment on September 3rd and finished out the year with the
Pittsburgh Pirates. Between the two teams, he set an MLB record for most scoreless to start a major league career.
While Overton is a great bullpen depth option for the Blue Jays, he has also has the ability to give them length and could conceivably be stretched out as a starter. The Blue Jays are thin in starting depth behind Jake Bloss and Easton Lucas, and Overton has made 10 big league starts in 18 career games.
Having also suited up for the C
Cincinnati Reds, Overton is 1-2 with a 4.85 ERA for his career.
