The Toronto Blue Jays lost 3-1 to the Houston Astros in Wednesday night action at Daikin Park. The Blue Jays, who were swept by Houston, have now lost five in a row and drop back to below .500 for the first time since opening day.
The story, once again, was a lack of offence.
The Blue Jays got four hits, which was as much as they mustered in each of the previous two contests combined.
After starter Bowden Francis allowed three runs in the bottom of the third, including a solo home run to Christian Walker, the Blue Jays got one back in the fourth. With Vladimir Guerrero Jr. On first base following a single, George Springer hit a scorching double to right-centre to bring the score to 3-1.
The Blue Jays made things interesting in the ninth. After a George Springer walk, Ernie Clement hit a pinch-hit double to give Toronto runners at second and third with one out. However, Josh Hader got Alejandro Kirk and Myles Straw to end the game.
Everybody is emphasising that it is still early, indeed this is only the Blue Jays 25th game, but that line only works for so long.
The month of may begins next week and the Blue Jays will be under increasing scrutiny to get the power going.
Fortunately, like is all too common these days, the bullpen kept the Blue Jays in the game. Chad Green, Yimi Garcia, and Jeff Hoffman kept the Astros off the scoreboard the rest of the way in the hopes that the Blue Jays would catch up.
After an off-day on Thursday, the Blue Jays begin a three-game set against the New York Yankees on Friday in a series that could see the return of Daulton Varsho.
Jose Berrios will be opposed by Carlos Carrasco. First pitch is schedule for 7:07PM ET
