The Toronto Blue Jays have signed free agent shortstop Raimundo De Los Santos. In conjunction with the announcement, De Los Santos was assigned to the FCL Blue Jays, the team's rookie affiliate in the Florida Coast League.
The 20 year old from San Pedro De Macoris, Dominican Republic, was initially signed as an undrafted free agent by the
Boston Red Sox in 2023. After nearly a year in the Dominican Summer League, he progressed to the Rookie League in May of 2024. However, the Red Sox chose to release him at the end of March.
Now, the Blue Jays have swooped in and added him as depth. Because he was initially signed by the Red Sox, De Los Santos will not count toward's the Jays international pool money, which goes towards players signed directly out of their international home club.
Although De Los Santos is listed as a shortstop on the the Blue Jays transactions page, he has actually spent more time in the outfield, making 50 appearances in CF, seven in left, and five in RF. He has also played 19 games at 2nd base.
Despite all this, it appears as though the Blue Jays - at least first for now - plan to use him up the middle.
While De Los Santos doesn't hit for a ton of power - he has yet to hit his first professional home run - he has an above average .352 OBP and stole 28 bases in 46 games last year with the FCL Red Sox. He also has a decent walk rate.
He will be an intriguing prospect to watch in the coming years.
