Will Sammon of The Athletic adds that the Red Sox are sending $8 million to the White Sox as part of the agreement.
The Red Sox are sending $8 million (of Hicks’ $24 million) to Chicago as part of this trade, league sources said.
White Sox will need to open two spots on its 40-man roster to finalize the trade for Hicks and Sandlin
Ziehl, 22, has yet to make his major league debut. During the 2025 season, he posted a 4.12 ERA and 1.26 WHIP across three minor-league levels between the Yankees and White Sox organizations.
Hicks, 29, is coming off the worst season of his career, recording a 6.95 ERA and 1.66 WHIP while pitching for the Giants and Red Sox in 2025.
After attempting to transition into a starting role in 2024, Hicks returned to the bullpen with Boston.
He previously pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays during the 2023 season and owns a career 4.41 ERA and 1.40 WHIP over seven MLB seasons.
From Boston’s perspective, the trade functions primarily as a salary dump.
The Red Sox shed $16 million of the $24 million still owed to Hicks over the next two seasons, though doing so required parting with Sandlin to make the trade happen.
Sandlin, 24, was drafted in 2022 and has not yet appeared in the majors. He posted a 4.50 ERA and 1.37 WHIP between Double-A and Triple-A in 2025 and was ranked as Boston’s No. 11 prospect by Baseball America entering the 2026 season.
