The
Toronto Blue Jays surprised the baseball world when they cut ties with their popular, local closer following the 2024 season.
Turns out, they might have been onto something.
Still, it pales in comparison to the type of season that Romano is having.
In his lone season in Philly, Romano has given up 39 runs in 49 games, with an ERA of 8.23 in 42.2 innings. He gave up 74 runs across his six seasons with Toronto. His -1.7 WAR is also the second worst in the majors.
Jordan Romano will throw another bullpen tomorrow and a live BP Saturday, Rob Thomson said. Can he salvage something out of this disaster season?
But what does it mean for Romano and his career?
It is likely going to be a rough offseason for Jordan Romano
As the Hive mentions, offseasons generally aren't kind to 32-year old struggling relievers. Given his lack of results, it is unlikely the Philadelphia brings him back on the same type of deal.
For his part, Romano knows it hasn't been a great year. When asked about his future, the two-time All-Star said he was just focused on finishing strong.
"Just come back, have a good finish. The season obviously didn't go how I wanted it, but I'm just kind of looking ahead, looking forward. I can't change that, so just going to try to finish strong.»
Even though his future is not looking good, it is possible that a team takes a flyer and signs him to a minor-league deal, a relatively common practice for veterans looking to get back on track.
A strong finish will be key to that.
