According to Jeff Passan, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. turned down a lot of money. Appearing on Blair & Barker, Passan said he didn't really have any specifics.
We know it was a lot. We know it was record-setting amount. But no one is willing to say what the figure was.
Unless
David Ortiz just told the world. Yes, that David Ortiz.
The Red Sox legend and 1st ballot Hall of Famer is quite close with the Guerrero family, and knows Vlad Sr. from his playing days. He has become an important figure the younger Vladdy's life.
In an interview with Z101 Digital in the Dominican Republic, he was asked about Guerrero's situation and gave an oddly specific number.
He deserves a 13-year, $585 million contract. Vladdy Jr. is an elite offensive player, he's young and with Gold Glove-caliber defence.
There it is. 13 years, $585MM. That works out to $45MM per year.
It's a weirdly specific number. And Ortiz has no reason to lie.
Is that too high? Too rich for the
Blue Jays blood? Spoctrac currently has Vlad as $38MM player. If he has a monster season, there's no reason why that number won't go up.
Perhaps it was the length, rather than the AAV, that irked the Blue Jays front office.
Still, Passan laments the sadness of the situation, saying that even if Guerrero is overvaluing himself, a homegrown star, who is a Canadian citizen and who has openly expressed his desire to stay, is the one person you absolutely have to close the deal with.
It's going to be a long season.
