On the eve of opening day 2025, infielder Kevin Smith has announced his retirement from the game of baseball.
Smith 28, was a fourth round selection by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2017 draft and made his major league debut with the club four years later. In 18 games for the Blue Jays hit .094 with three hits on one home run.
Although Smith was always an above average defender, he was never able to unlock his full potential with the bat and showed some impatience at the plate, having 104 career strikeouts to just 15 walks in 116 career games.
Although he got more playing time with Oakland in 2022 and 2023, it was much of the same story, as he hit below .200 and had a very low on-base percentage. He was let go at the end of the season.
In January of 2024, he signed a minor league deal with his hometown New York Yankees, but ended up spending the majority of the year at Triple-A, appearing in just two big league games for the club. He was designated for assignment after the season and ended up electing free agency.
Smith retires with a career .104/.173/.215 slash line to go along with eight home runs and 25 RBIs.
Smith has not yet announced what his next steps are, but at only 28, a lot of opportunities will present themselves. Maybe he'll get into coaching.
