The Seattle Mariners have added another former Blue Jays player to the roster. Outfielder Samad Taylor had his contract selected by the club. To open up a spot on the active roster, outfielder Dylan Moore was placed on the 10-day IL, while Gregory Santos was transferred to the 60-day IL to make room for Taylor on the 40 man.
While most known as an outfielder, Taylor has been playing more second base as of late, and also is capable at third. He has played shortstop in the minors.
Taylor was originally drafted by Cleveland in the 10th round of the 2016 draft and was traded to the Blue Jays along with Thomas Pannone in 2017 for reliever Joe Smith.
After working his way through the farm system, he began 2022 in Triple-A Buffalo before being shipped to the Royals as part of a package for Whit Merrifield.
He made his big league debut with Kansas City in 2023, appearing in 30 games, garnering eight steals and four RBIs. He briefly appeared in three games with Seattle in 2024.
His Triple-A numbers are much better than his stats at the big league level, so even if his current stint his short, he should still stick on the 40-man for a while. Taylor still has another option and so can be sent down without being exposed to waivers.
Look for him to fill in at multiple positions as well occasional pinch running duties.
