The Miami Marlins have announced that outfielder Griffin Conine is set to undergo shoulder surgery, which could likely keep him out for the rest of the season.
While more will be known once Conine meets with Dr. Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Monday, the fact that a surgery has already been scheduled doesn't bode well Conine and the Marlins.
The outfielder originally dislocated his shoulder sliding into second base on an RBI double in a game against the
Philadelphia Phillies last week. He was put on the 60-Day IL the following, bypassing the traditional 15-day IL, indicating the Marlins knew how severe the injury was.
The son of "Mr. Marlin"
Jeff Conine, Griffin made his big league debut with the club in 2024. He was originally drafted by the
Toronto Blue Jays in the 2nd round of the 2018 draft, reaching as high as what was then single-A Lansing.
However, he was always destined to follow his father. In 2020, the Blue Jays traded Conine and a player to be named later to Miami for infielder Jonathan Villar.
After missing the 2020 seaon due to the pandemic, Conine started 2021 with High-A Beloit and eventually made it to Double-A Pensacola.
He made his debut in 2024, appearing in 30 games for the club. He has played in 20 games for the Marlins this season, and was considered an everyday player before his injury.
Although a late-bloomer by MLB standards, his improved plate discipline has kept him in the lineup this season.
In his absence, look for Javier Sanoja, Ronny Simon, and Eric Wagaman to garner playing time in left field, as well as prospect Jakob Marsee, who could receive a call-up later this week.
For his career, Conine is hitting .274/.338/.445 with four home runs and 19 RBIs.
