Casey Lawrence is a free agent. After being designated for assignment by the Seattle Mariners late last week, the 37 year old right-hander opted to reject his outright assignment and instead offer his services to 29 other teams.
On April 9th, Lawrence returned to the big leagues for the first time since 2023 and threw three innings for the Mariners that evening. He picked up the win after allowing a pair of runs on four hits and walk. He was DFA'd the following day to give the Mariners more options out of the bullpen.
Although he is now a free agent, it wouldn't be surprising if Lawrence decides to re-up with Seattle on a minor league deal, given the history he has with the organization. He appeared in 34 games for them in 2017-2018, as well as another 15 in 2023.
Lawrence came up with the
Blue Jays in 2017 after signing with them as an undrafted free agent way back in 2010. He pitched in 27 games for Toronto, including two starts, garnering a 203 record with a 6.34 ERA before he was DFA'd. The Mariners claimed then claimed him off waivers.
After spending all of 2018 with Seattle, Lawrence played a year in Japan, and then ended up in an independent league, with a brief stop as a
Twins minor leaguer in between.
He re-joined the Blue Jays in 2022, appearing in six games. He has also pitched for the
Cardinals.
The Mariners clearly see something in Lawrence. Since 2017, they've claimed him off waivers and signed him to three minor league contracts.
We'll know if a fourth opportunity comes in the days ahead.
