During Wednesday's victory against the Atlanta Braves, the Toronto Blue Jays did something they had never done in their 48-year history. They struck out 19 batters in a nine inning game.

Starter Chris Bassitt set the tone early, striking out the side in the first inning. He had five strikeouts through two and when it was all said and done, the MLB's ERA leader had ten punch-outs in five innings of work.
Brendon Little then came in and picked up where Brendon Little left out, getting his out via the K. He proceeded to also to strike out the side in his lone inning of work. That makes 13 through six.
Nick Sandlin added one more before Yimi Garcia Garcia pitched 1.1 innings and garnered four strikeouts. That's 18.
Jeff Hoffman came in and got one more strikeout in the ninth to help the Blue Jays arrive at their total of 19.
The Jays total of 19 combined strikeouts is one short of the major league nine-inning record of 20. That figure has been accomplished seven times, most recently by the Houston Astros in 2022.
Four pitchers have also individually struck 20 batters in a game. Roger Clemens was the first to do so, and did twice in his career. Kerry Wood, Randy Johnson, and Max Scherzer have also accomplished the feat.
Tom Cheney struck out 21 in 16 innings in 1962.
The Blue Jays franchise record for most strikeouts in a game by a single pitcher is 18, which was set by Clemens. Brandon Morrow is close behind with 17.
