For many major league baseball players, there is a choice between professional sports and academics. For Ricky Romero that decision came later in life.

Over a decade after his career ended, the now 41-year old former All-Star and former Blue Jays ace recently finished his sociology degree.
Romero, who has become an analyst in the couple of years, wishes that didn't have to miss opening day.
"Bummed I won't be there tomorrow with Jays fans watching opening day at the Rogers Centre. My school got in the way!"
Romero was famously drafted with the sixth overall in the 2005 draft, one pick ahead of Troy Tulowitzki. Before he was picked out of college, he was drafted out of high school in the 37th round by the Boston Red Sox.
Romero's degree, which he first started back in 2002, is in sociology and is from Cal State Fullerton.
Romero first came up with the Blue Jays in 2009, before having a career year in 2011, being named to his first All-Star game. After being named the opening day starter in 2012, he floundered the second half of season, going an abysmal 1-13. Though no reason was given for his sudden decline in performance, he later claimed that he was pitching with bad knees throughout the entire season,
After being the opening day starter, he started 2013 in Triple-A and never fully recovered.
And yet, Romero is grateful for his time in the major leagues.
«I was hoping for a happier ending, but not every story has to have a happy ending. I'm just grateful that I have a story at all. "

Congratulations Ricky on your college graduation!
