The New York Mets announced that they have selected the contract of relief pitcher Genesis Cabrera. Left-hander Brandon Waddell and right-hander Chris Devenski were optioned to Triple-A to make room for Cabrera and fellow lefty Joe Adcock while A.J. Minter and Frankie Montas have been transferred to the 60-Day IL.
Cabrera signed a minor league contract with the Mets this past offseason after spending the last season-and-a-half with the
Blue Jays.
While he had some success in Toronto, he also walked 35 batters in 86.1 innings, a walk rate of 11.4%. While he was able to get out jams with strikeouts, he was also inconsistent in that regard.
Still, it was a surprise to see the Blue Jays cut Cabrera in favour of offering him salary arbitration, which led him to sign a minor league deal with the Mets.
He also gained infamy in Toronto after initiating a shoving match with Jose Caballero of the Tampa Bay Rays.
While he has an ERA of 7.88 in eight innings for Syracuse, it is a relatively small sample size and he also has a strand rate of 34.9%.
The Mets also are dire need for arms, having recently lost Minter and Danny Young to potential season-ending injuries.
Now, Cabrera will have a chance to prove himself once again and the Mets will see which version of the left-hander they will get.
