What do you do when no team takes a chance on you and your career is seemingly over? Become a pitching guru of course. That is precisely the route being taken by former Blue Jays relief pitcher Anthony Bass.
The right-hander hasn't appeared in a major league game since the Blue Jays cut ties with him in 2023 and while he never formally announced his retirement, his social media would indicate that he has created a new identity for himself as a pitching instructor.
Bass first came to the Blue Jays after they acquired him off waivers from the Mariners and he pitched in 26 games in the shortened 2020 season. After signing with the Marlins that offseason, he was traded back to the Blue Jays in 2022.
While he seemingly disappeared from major league circles following his tumultuous departure from Toronto, his social media pages list him as pitching instructor. Upon further inspection, he appears to serving as a Varsity Baseball Assistant Coach at Franklin Road Academy in Nashville.
In his profile page on lessons.com, he offers private, specialized pitching instruction - including the use of weighted baseball, tubing, and mechanical breakdowns - at the low price for $125 per hour. Sounds like a good deal. While he has some good reviews, they appear to have stopped as of July 2024, which would line up with when he started the job at Franklin Road.
I've been working with Anthony for over half a year now and he has helped me be able to tap into my highest potential and be even more confident and successful as a pitcher. - Tate R
He started his instructional life back when he was still a player and used to house camps at Wayne State University, which is also his Alma Mater. His main focus as a teacher is on visualization and comprehensive development.
At 37, he could still land another big league gig, though he seems to be fully leaning into his new life.
