The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Boston Red Sox in extra innings in Wednesday Night action at Fenway Park. With the win, Toronto improves to 8-5 on the season.
Kevin Gausman, starting for the Blue Jays, and Tanner Houck, on the hill for Boston, were engaged in a pitcher's duel for much of the game.
A day after Easton Lucas struck out eight, Gausman fanned 10 Boston batters, the eighth time he has struck out at least that many in his Blue Jays career. This follows his last start where he didn't strike out a single batter.
The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the first inning thanks to three straight singles and a RBI groundout by Will Wagner. The Red Sox answered in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly from Alex Bregman. Centre fielder
Nathan Lukes made a diving catch to limit the Red Sox to just one run. The run was unearned after Alejandro Kirk overthrew second base.
Gausman took things from there going eight innings, giving up four hits and striking out ten.
The Blue Jays ran into a bit of bad luck as they lined into two double plays after initiating a hit-and-run. Andres Gimenez was doubled off after Wagner lined to right in the fourth and then after Vladimir Guerrero Jr. singled, Anthony Santander hit a bullet to first baseman Triston Casas, who stepped on the bag for to double up Guerrero.
Jeff Hoffman was dynamite and got key strike outs in both the ninth and tenth to keep the game knotted at one.
The Blue Jays took the lead in top of the 11th. With Ernie Clement the automatic runner at 2nd, Nathan Lukes grounded out to advance him to third before
Bo Bichette hit a sacrifice fly to centre to bring him home.
Nick Sandlin pitched a scoreless 11th to get the save - the second of his major league career - and preserve the win for the Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays wrap up their series tomorrow in a game that sees Chris Bassitt take on Walker Buehler. First pitch is scheduled for 4:10PM ET
