Casey Lawrence has returned to the Seattle Mariners. The right-hander was designated for assignment earlier in the week after a three-inning performance on April 9th. He rejected an outright assignment in favour of free agency.
This is the fourth time Lawrence has been DFA'd by the Mariners, only to be re-signed by the team. Much like Jesse Chavez, another former Blue Jays pitcher who has gone through something similar over the last several years with the Atlanta Braves, Lawrence seems perfectly happy riding the DFA wave.
Not only has Lawrence re-signed with the Mariners, but they appear to have already selected his contract from Triple-A Tacoma and will be activated in time for the game on Friday.
Lawrence will join former another former Blue Jay - Trent Thornton - in the Mariners bullpen. Former Blue Jays first baseman Rowdy Tellez is also on the roster and Tayler Saucedo is currently in Tacoma.
Although he is 37, Lawrence only has 60 career games under his belt. A versatile pitcher, he provide length out of the pen for Mariners - he went three innings earlier this year - can be utilized for a single inning, and can even spot start.
He has a good chance to pitch against his former team as Thornton, Andres Munoz, Gabe Speier, and Carlos Vargas have each pitched on back-to-back days. It would be Lawrence's first appearance at Rogers Centre since leaving Toronto.
He picked up the win in is only appearance this year, but is 5-4 with a 6.73 ERA for his career.
