The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Washington Nationals 5-2 in Monday night action at the Rogers Centre. With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 3-2 on the season, going above .500 for the first time.
Francis looked like his late 2024 self, keeping the Washington hitless through 5.1 innings. The bid for history ended when he gave up back-to-back to homeruns to CJ Abrams and James Wood. Those were his only blemishes as he struck out four and walked three in six innings.
Soroka left one batter into the sixth with an apparent injury. Lucas Sims came on in relief.
Andres Gimenez continued his hot start to the season, hitting a solo home run in the 2nd inning to put the Blue Jays up 1-0. It was his third home run in five games.
In the 2nd, Alan Roden and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. both doubled to give the Blue Jays a two run lead. They added two more in the fourth. Gimenez led off the inning with a walk, stole second and then was doubled home by
Alejandro Kirk. Will Wagner singled and Lukes hit a groundout to bring Kirk home.
The Blue Jays got one more in the eighth thanks to an RBI single from
George Springer.
Nick Sandlin pitched a scoreless seventh while Brendon Little got out of a jam in the eighth. With Jeff Hoffman unavailable, Yimi Garcia worked a perfect ninth to pick up his first save of the season and preserve the win for the Blue Jays.
A couple of Jays players also reached milestones tonight. Gimenez' stolen base was the 100th of his career, while Springer also got his 500th hit in a Blue Jays uniform.
The Jays and Nationals continue their series tomorrow. Jose Berrios gets the ball for Toronto, while Trevor Williams will be on the mound for Washington. First pitch is scheduled for 4:07PM ET.
