Blue Jays injury updates

Out of players currently on the IL, it feels like Daulton Varsho is the closest to returning. Initially, there were thoughts that Varsho might be ahead of schedule and ready for opening. Alas, while his hitting was back, his arm still wasn't he or the Blue Jays wanted it to be.

But now, almost a week into the season, he appears to be getting closer. He threw from 150 feet today. While he is not there yet, he could potentially return by the end of next. Ideally, the Blue Jays would love to have him hit 180 feet before he returns to game action, but anywhere from 175-200 feet will suffice.

Notes were also dropped about Erik Swanson and Ryan Burr Though neither are ready to come back, Swanson appears to the closer of the two. They both took a step forward and were seen throwing off flat ground. While the next step would be a mound, it is a positive development that they are throwing at all.

As was noted earlier in the today, Max Scherzer traveled to the US to visit a hand specialist. While the results of that aren't yet available, manager John Schneider mentioned that after Scherzer speaks with the team's medical staff, the Blue Jays should know their next steps by tomorrow morning.

Varsho's return will likely cause the biggest effect in terms of roster move and construction, while Swanson will re-enforce an already tired bullpen. Scherzer is probably a bit further away while Burr is out of options and even if he returns to full health, there might not be a job waiting for him.

The good news is that, as of right now, none of them appear to be overly serious.
