The Toronto Blue Jays now have another Canadian pitcher in their ranks. They have signed 18-year old Aidan Taggart. The transaction originally happened back on March 14th, but has only recently come to light.
Taggart, who is originally from Grimsby, Ontario, is a product of West Niagara High School. Standing at 6'3 and 200 pounds, the Canadian was swooped by the Jays on a recent road trip during the spring.
Taggart had been playing for the Fieldhouse Pirates, a youth team based in Burlington, Ontario. They were on a road trip when a player development scout noticed Taggart and negotiated a contract.
After signing, the Blue Jays assigned Taggart to the FCL Blue Jays in the Florida Coast League. He is the second Pirates alumni to currently be in the FCL, along with the Nationals Nate Ochoa. The Blue Jays have another former Pirate in their system as well, Bryce Arnold, who is currently with Dunedin.
In addition to playing for the Pirates, Taggart also made a splash while playing for Canada's National Youth (U18) Team. Part of that journey included a trip down to the Dominican Republic in 2023.
According to various sources, Taggart has a commitment to the University of Utah this fall; it's currently unknown how the Jays signing will affect these plans.
While he is still only 18, Taggart dominated at a recent Futures Showcases and the Blue Jays clearly liked what they saw.
He is a strong power pitcher with great potential and high-upside. It will be interesting to watch his development over the next several years. Hopefully, he'll stick around.
