Gimenez sets new Blue Jays record

When the Toronto Blue Jays traded for Andres Gimenez this past winter, they knew were getting a premium defender, perhaps the best defensive second baseman in all of baseball. And while they were also counting on an offensive resurgence, no one could have predicted what Gimenez was about to do.
Gimenez hit nine home runs in all of 2024. He didn't hit his third home run until May 19th. He has three through five games in 2025. When he his third home run of the season on Monday, he set a new Blue Jays record. He became the first Blue Jays player in history to have three home runs in his first five games.
Through five games, Gimenez has three home runs and five RBIs to go along with a .333 average and 1.399 OPS.
While it's definitely way too early to make any predictions, it seems unlikely that Gimenez will hit 40 home runs; his career high is 17, which he hit in 2022. He also had 15 in 2023, so the pop has always been there.
Still, it's very encouraging for the Blue Jays to have a glove-first player be leading the team in home runs as it helps take some of the pressure off of guys like
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and
Anthony Santander.
And it's not just home runs. Gimenez also has two doubles. In addition, he has shown off his speed on the basepaths, stealing a base - the 100th of his career on Monday. It's a big reason why the Blue Jays have him in the number four spot in the batting order.
While he likely won't keep up this pace, Gimenez will ride this wave for as long as he can.
