The former Blue Jays closer had his 2024 season cut short with an elbow injury and then found himself non-tendered by the club.
In the interim between his release and signing with the Phillies, he turned to a couple of former Blue Jays and old friends, Aaron Sanchez and Ryan Borucki for help.
He had been rehabbing down in Florida at the Blue Jays complex, a routine that was quickly ended upon the Jays not renewing his contract.
«I'd been doing everything at the complex so after [the Jays cut ties], I was like, 'I've got to find something ASAP. I was like, 'Hey boys, can I hop in on the workouts?'»
Sanchez and Romano were briefly teammates at the major league level in 2019, while Borucki stayed with the Jays until 2022. However, all three played together in the minor leagues and grew up in the Jays system.
«When I look back at my time there, it's not bitter, it's just kind of, like, that was such a cool experience. And I'm glad I got to do that because it was really my dream. I'm happy with how I competed and treated people. I look at it as a really cool chapter of my life, and I'm on to the next one.»
Romano, who recently signed a one year contract with the Phillies, is third all time in Blue Jays history in saves with 105 and was a two-time All-Star.
