Lovelady elects free agency

While the team's transactions log listed him as being outrighted to Triple-A Buffalo, what likely happened was that Lovelady rejected the outright assignment and opted to test the market instead.
As Lovelady has already been outrighted once in his career and has more than three years experience but less than five, he had a right to choose his future.
While it leaves with one less left-handed reliever, Lovelady's 21.60 ERA in two games with the Blue Jays, likely pushed him further down the team's depth chart. The Blue Jays called up rookie LHP Mason Fluharty to take Lovelady's place on both the active and 40-man rosters, and also have Josh Walker in Triple-A.
Besides the Blue Jays, Lovelady has also pitched for the Royals, Athletics, Cubs, and Rays, but has a career ERA of 5.26 to go along with 5-13 record.
While his first appearance for the Blue Jays was scoreless, he allowed four runs in an inning of work against the Baltimore Orioles. Over his 1.2 innings of work this season, he suffered from a lack of control, hitting three batters and walking two, though he did also notch three strikeouts.
While his career numbers haven't been great, Lovelady will probably be able to secure himself a minor deal with another team, as a low-cost lefty depth option. If he can fix his control issues, he could be a valuable asset to a major league bullpen.
If not, it could be a long road ahead.
