There was much debate after John Schneider let Kevin Gausman throw 53 pitches in the third inning of Sunday's game against the Yankees. In the new-school of baseball where every pitch is monitored, criticism was swift and intense. One insider to really clamp down on the Blue Jays was analyst and former GM Jim Bowden.

Gausman's 53-pitch third inning was the most by any pitcher in an inning in three years, and he finished as the losing pitcher after giving up six runs, five walks and three hits in less than three innings. While much of it had to do with not getting close calls from home plate umpire Chris Conroy, Bowden doesn't buy that excuse.
If I saw my manager leave a pitcher in for 53 pitches [in one inning], by the 8th inning I'd be in his office sitting in his chair waiting for himWe've got $110 million invested in Kevin Gausman and you're gonna let him throw 53 pitches in one inning? - Jim Bowden

While Bowden's sentiments are understandable, Gausman had only thrown 18 pitches threw the first two innings so it's not like he was at an elevated pitch count. It was also only the third inning. Additionally, it was a double header, so Gausman would probably have had to eat his pitch count regardless.
Still, it wasn't the most of ideal situation. Bowden doesn't solely blame Schneider though; he feels Pete Walker is more at fault.
«I don't just blame the manager. Where's the bench coach? Where's the pitching coach? Where's the staff? What did he walk three guys in a row? What are we watching?

Tell me what we're watching in the dugout. $110 million your owner has invested in this pitcher and we're gonna leave him out there and risk him injuring the arm. Are you kidding me? Unacceptable.

At the end of the day, it's one bad April from a guy who has been the model of consistency over the last several seasons. It may have been ugly, but it's not going to affect anything long term.
