During an hour-long conversation with the media in Dunedin, Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro expressed optimism that they will be able to reach an agreement with Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Although the two sides failed to reach an agreement before Vlad's self-imposed deadline at the beginning of Spring Training, recent reports indicate that the Blue Jays are set to make him another offer, one much more closely aligned with his original asking price.
Whether or not Vlad accepts or whether he will stick to his promise of not negotiating during the regular season remains to be seen. Still Shapiro remains optimistic.
"When it comes to Vlad's contract situation, I guess my overarching feeling is one of optimism. I think we're going to sign him. I think we're going to extend him. The reason I feel that way is because we have such a clear alignment on a desired outcome - Mark Shapiro.
And yet, Vladdy re-signing with the Jays isn't as a universally-loved plan as one might think. Yes, the majority want the first baseman locked up long-term, but many others feel that his inconsistency combined with his asking price make him not worth it.
For his part, Guerrero has said he wants to remain a Blue Jay for life. Both sides understand the risk of negotiating a contract of this magnitude.
The challenge has been, the area we've talked about before, finding that sweet spot of sharing risk. What defines the sweet spot? Different contracts, different moments in time, that make it more of a challenge or less of challenge, ultimately, sometimes free agency provides the clearest answer to that.
Maybe this was the plan all along. Both sides playing the long game. Still this isn't a conversation that will end anytime soon.
